EVERY MOMENT…

Every Moment

The lessons children teach us… The powerful reminders they share with us…

Two weeks ago was one such occasion. My six year old, Christian, had woken up and dressed himself before racing excitedly into my bedroom… I sat under my feather duvet, still sipping my morning cup of coffee in my pyjamas. He seemed excited, cheerful, eager to start the day…

After we had raised Rachel, who is generally not an early morning person, from her cosy bed, the kids began their usual morning routine- breakfast, face wash, hair damp and comb (seeing as it’s usually sticking up in a few directions) and a toothbrushing.

Then, almost daily, they wait for mom… whilst I shower, dress, swirl up a smoothie and catch up with all the other odds and ends until I am ready for the school trip. The children use this opportunity to the fullest, often racing outside to grab a few extra minutes of serious, whole-hearted play…

That particular morning was windy in our neck of the woods… very windy… I personally don’t know many people who love wind apart from windsurfers, kite boarders and a few other extreme-sports maniacs…

It was in fact so windy that it was one of those occasions where I reminded the kids not to play under the desperately old jacaranda tree due to frequently falling large branches which hold the potential to do some serious damage…

As I stood sipping my blended green concoction, I glanced out of the kitchen window and observed my children on the paved driveway. Rachel riding her bicycle, her precious Rhino soft toy strapped to the centre bar, and Christian darting around with his swirling, dancing, home-made kite…

“A kite… ”

It struck me immediately… My comment about the windy morning had not deterred him for one millisecond from enjoying it to the fullest… He had decided to instead use the ‘not-so-fine’ weather to have the most fun possible…

The innate nature of children is to see potential in every situation…

It’s beautiful… It’s an ability to be treasured… It’s a virtue to be embraced, encouraged…

Yet, somewhere along the journey of young life, this positive mindset that innately exists in our children becomes contaminated so that by the time we reach adulthood, most often, the fire has dwindled to ash… It’s too easy to see the negative and forget that every opportunity has the potential to become magical…

I put down my green smoothie, and went to join the kids… I stood in the middle of the driveway and was enveloped in laughter and delight… Such gratitude filled my heart…

I had the opportunity to experience all the happiness that made an otherwise windy and ‘ordinary’ morning extraordinary…

Yet another valuable lesson from my children- Every moment, every day, holds potential- for beauty, for laughter, for delight, for memories to be made… Our mindset is the most powerful aspect withholding so much of the joy our days have to offer …

Let’s learn from our children- Embrace each moment- even the windy days hold the potential for magic.

With motherly love
