Couch Work 🛋 (verb ~ relating to the healing therapy work on a psych’s couch).⁣
⁣
We do the “Couch Work” so that our kids don’t have to. The cycle stops with us… ⁣
⁣
I’m not going to pretend otherwise - making the shift from an authoritarian parenting mindset to a gentle one is no easy task… (I’ve been on the journey for over a decade…) ⁣
⁣
But it’s also mind-blowingly incredible what just one parent who is committed to Gentle Parenting can do to change the destructive patterns of past generations. ⁣
I am privileged to work with so many adults on this journey of healing and change-making.⁣
⁣
Even some of the teens I work with have told me that they are changing things within themselves and doing the healing so that their kids don’t have to. Pretty amazing, right?⁣
⁣
Goosebump material if you ask me… ⁣
⁣
And how awesome to have so many of you who have joined this dynamic pattern-altering journey so your kids don’t have to do the “Couch Work.” 🛋⁣
⁣
Wow, just wow! This is how we change the world. 🌎⁣

“I don’t want to walk anymore...”

“I’m too tired...”

“It’s such a long way down...”

This had been going on a while… The grumbled words kept gushing forth…

It HAD been a long way up… We’d already converted the unicorn jersey into a strapless shirt (as the t-shirt underneath was AWOL after being used as a partial cossie on Boulders Beach)… But for a hot and bothered seven-year-old, not even an enticing, promised gelato ice-cream in Kalk Bay was enough to detract from the exhausting view of the long pathway down from Cape Point lighthouse…

Having been abandoned by the boys who had set off on a walk (one that I really wanted to do too), I didn’t think my brain could deal with a downhill kilometer of “I-wish-I-was-back-in-the-car park-already” complaints…

Right! Mom hat on! Step one-empathize: “It has been a lot of walking today and I know you are tired.”

Step two : Try turn this long haul around… (Admittedly at this point I was thinking, “Sainted sack, please let this idea work!”)

“We’re going to play a gratitude game. We each take turns to say ten things we are grateful for.”

(Big time holding thumbs that the researched neuropsychological power of gratitude that I KNOW exists, would pull through for a seven-year-old too… and of course that she would WANT to play the game…)

I started… “I am grateful for being able to breathe in this incredible, fresh mountain-top air”…

She followed… (I still didn’t know at this point if this strategy was going to work…) She blew me away…

“I am grateful that I am not in a wheelchair, that I have legs, that I am not sleeping in a cardboard house, that I have food to eat, that I can walk”…

I continued, “I am grateful to be in the middle of such amazing nature.”

She carried on and didn’t stop… “I am grateful for the holiday together, that I have a family, for seeing the seals, for swimming on the beach, for being with the penguins…. “ By this stage, she was almost dancing down the walkway…

Then my heart sank for a split second… I feared we were on an emotional detour again…

This mornings self-care 🏃‍♀️🧘‍♀️🪴⁣
⁣
Although my walk/run was not nearly as vigorous as it would have been without my sidekicks, it was soul-filling and oh-so-exciting to be close enough to hug a seal 🦭 😂.⁣
⁣
Lots of windy fresh air (as you can see in the fly-away hair pic) but what a great little morning tank-filler!⁣
⁣
Let me know in the comments what your self-care activities are! Keep it going - you KNOW it’s the kindest thing you can do for your kids. 🪴🧘‍♀️🏃‍♀️🤍⁣

“Mom, I am never going down. I just love nature and I am staying at the top.” Words from my seven-year-old nature empath at the top of Table Mountain.

And yes, her t-shirt is characteristically back-to-front 🤣 and hopefully the message is being read by many.

Ps. I am pleased to report that I did manage to convince her otherwise and we are in the queue heading towards the cable car to go back down! ♥️
